Flicks and Reruns: Ang Mga Kidnapper ni Ronnie Lazaro
A fun, enjoyable buddy flick about six friends who decided to join Sineng Pambansa's National Film Competition. The troop is led by Bebot (Nonie Buencamino) a former OFW who creates a plan to make a film that will star no-less than Ronnie Lazaro- the It actor of Philippine indie movies. His zany bunch includes Pipoy (Epy Quizon), a call center agent, Hesus (Raul Morit)- A Christ-like quack prophet, Boy George (Dwight Gaston), a camera repairman, Hector (Hector Macaso) a movie stuntman and Abdul (Soliman Cruz) a Muslim pirated DVD vendor.
Their plan goes horribly in disarray when they "accidentally" kidnap Ronnie Lazaro who had just rejected their "skrip", the friends' misadventures takes relevant potshots at the two-faced Philippine movie industry, the mainstream cinema with all its cliches and pitfalls and the indie filmmaking movement homing on its superficially high-brow leanings which practically alienated a Filipino audience it is supposed to be winning over.
The movie's best part would be the parody of the much-stereotyped Filipino action film, which elicited one of the best laughs in the year. Certainly in my opinion a notch above another similarly themed movie Ang Babae sa Septic Tank.
I hope that Ang mga Kidnapper ni Ronnie Lazaro could open the eyes of the Filipino audience to undiscovered gems of indie movies, a bridge that will connect much of the public, most blissfully unaware that one great watchable Pinoy flick doesn't have to be a polished Regal or Star Cinema movie featuring the cooing eyes of a John Lloyd Cruz or the vista of a devastatingly alluring Kristine Reyes. It could just have talented but unheralded actors or as what Ronnie Lazaro said in the movie- one great story.
